Amba-JGAngelesAmbassador Joseph Gerard B. Angeles is a career diplomat who joined the Philippine Foreign Service in 1992 and passed the Foreign Service Officers Examination in 1991. He is a member of both the Philippine Bar and the New York Bar, USA. He finished his Bachelor of Laws (LIB), cum laude at the Ateneo de Davao University, and obtained his degree in B.S. Business Economics from the University of the Philippines in Diliman.

Amb. Angeles acquired his formal training as a diplomat from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, where he finished his Diplomatic Studies as a Chevening Scholar of the British Government. He graduated with highest honours, meriting the maximum four Awards of Distinction in the fields of International Relations, International Law, International Economics, and International Relations. The Award of Distinction is the highest honour given by the University of Oxford.

Amb. Angeles has served as Deputy Head of Embassy and Consul General of the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa, Canada. Before Canada, he was Consul at the Philippine Consulate General in New York, USA. Previous to that, he was 2nd Secretary and Consul, then Charge d’ Affaires, a.i. of the Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

In the DFA Home Office, Amb. Angeles served as Director in the Office of Legal Affairs, as Special Assistant in the Office of the Undersecretary for Administration, as Board Secretary of the Board of the Foreign Service Administration, and as Executive Director of the Office of Personnel and Administrative Services.

Before his appointment as Philippine Ambassador to South Africa, Amb. Angeles was the Senior Special Assistant of the Office of the Undersecretary for International Economic Relations (OUIER), and was the Department of Foreign Affairs’ Lead Officer for APEC and WTO.

As Lead Officer for APEC, he assisted the Undersecretary for International Economic Relations in securing the Philippine bid to host APEC in 2015. As Lead Officer for WTO, he formed part of the Philippine Delegation that negotiated the landmark Bali Package of the Doha Round.

Ambassador Angeles assumed as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of South Africa on 21 August 2014. He has concurrent jurisdiction over the Republic of Botswana, Kingdom of Lesotho, Republic of Mozambique, Republic of Namibia, Kingdom of eSwatini, Republic of Zambia, Republic of Mauritius, Republic of Madagascar, and Republic of Zimbabwe.
