The Philippine Embassy in Pretoria was among the diplomatic missions that participated in a briefing conducted by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) on 4 April 2024.

The ISS is an independent research institute that specializes on human security issues on the African continent. Headquartered in Pretoria, South Africa, it has regional offices in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; Dakar, Senegal; and Nairobi, Kenya.

The briefing was an initiative of the Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam in Pretoria, the current Chair of the ASEAN-Pretoria Committee (APC) which is comprised of the resident missions of ASEAN member states in South Africa.

Mr. Jakkie Cilliers, the organization’s founder and current chair of the board of trustees, and Mr. Gareth Newham, head of ISS’ justice and violence prevention program, served as resource speakers.

During the briefing, the ISS officials shared their perspective on recent domestic developments in South Africa.

In line with its mandate to enhance the visibility of ASEAN in South Africa, the APC also engages with think tanks, civil society organizations, and other non-state actors in the host country.
