Pretoria – On 4 August 2024, the Philippine Embassy in Pretoria joined the celebration of the 57th Anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) organized by the ASEAN communities in Mauritius. The event, which also celebrated Indonesian Independence Day, attracted around 300 attendees from various sectors of Mauritian society as well as the ASEAN communities on the island.
The event was graced by the Ambassador of the Philippines in Pretoria, Ms. Noralyn Jubaira Baja; Dr. Salman Al-Farisi, Secretary General of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA); Mr. Lanang Seputro, Permanent Chargé d’Affaires of the Republic of Indonesia in Madagascar; Mr. Paisit Boonparlit, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Royal Thai Embassy in Pretoria; and Mr. Saleem Beebeejaun, Honorary Consul of Malaysia in Mauritius. Their collective participation highlighted the strong and growing ties among ASEAN member states and their commitment, together with the ASEAN communities, to fostering collaborative relations with Mauritius.
The program commenced with the ceremonial playing of the ASEAN anthem, setting a tone of unity and shared purpose. Following this, speeches from the ASEAN diplomats underscored the achievements of ASEAN over the past 57 years and reiterated the importance of continued cooperation and solidarity. A highlight was the cutting of the ASEAN cake.
As the formalities concluded, the event transitioned into a lively afternoon of camaraderie and engagement. The community enjoyed various cultural performances, showcasing the rich traditions and artistic heritage of the member states. Interactive games, raffles, and delicious food further enhanced the festive atmosphere.
Overall, the 57th Anniversary celebration was a testament to the enduring spirit of cooperation and friendship that defines ASEAN, and highlighted the vibrant and dynamic nature of the relationship between ASEAN and the international community.
